Not far from the geographical center of Hamburg stands the Evangelical Lutheran Church of St. Gertrude on the idyllic Kuhmühlenteich lake. The brick Gothic building has one of the most beautiful church towers in the Hanseatic city.
The explosive population growth of the Hanseatic city in the second half of the 19th century necessitated the construction of new churches outside the city center.
When the foundation stone for St. Gertrude's Church was laid in 1882, the architect Johannes Otzen had no idea what organizational difficulties he would face.
Indeed, more than 460 different types of brick were actually used in the construction. Nevertheless, in 1885, after only three years of construction, the impressive, neo-Gothic hall church was completed, along with the parsonages to the right and left of it.
Due to its open location on the northern shore of the Kuhmühlenteich lake and its ornate exterior, St. Gertrud soon became a landmark of Hohenfelde and Uhlenhorst, and the community enjoyed immense popularity.
St. Gertrud's slender church tower is striking, as it is a unique feature: It is made of masonry all the way to the top. Thousands of stones, all of them differently glazed bricks, are arranged in an artistic pattern to form an 88-meter-high tower, crowned by a five-meter-high cross. The numerous decorative elements – cornices, gable tops, capitals, gargoyles – were made of sandstone.

Uhlenhorst is. Today's St. Gertrud Church on the Kuhmühlenteich is a neo-Gothic building by Johannes Otzen. Before the great fire of 1842, the Gertrudenkapelle stood here.
In front of it a "Luther oak", which was originally planted on the occasion of the 400th birthday of Martin Luther while the church was being built. Around this a circle of eight small sandstone obelisks, which refer to the former Hamburg parishes and their eponymous apostles
