      The Osterbek Canal was one of my first favorite places in Hamburg. The view from the Bramfelder Bridge when the U3 goes by, the noise when the rowing boats' sculls dive into the water - that's Hamburg for me. In spring you get the feeling that everyone is slowly waking up from their hibernation, sitting down on the steps by the water behind the Museum of Work and enjoying the first rays of sunshine. Or rent a pedal boat from the Dornheim boat rental company and watch the goings-on from the water. Once from the Museum of Work to Mühlenkamp and then back again with a coffee from Elbgold: My favorite walk in the Barmbek-Hood. Also the perfect program for a Sunday. I have often met up with my best friend on Sunday mornings, we strolled along the water together and looked back on the previous night of partying. Get out of the hustle and bustle of the city, in the city. Without having to drive anywhere first. That's the Osterbek Canal for me. I love strolling over the many small bridges, watching pedal boats and stopping on a park bench every now and then.
      One of many beautiful places in the unfairly underestimated Barmbek district.

        The Osterbek is a stream in Hamburg. It rises in Farmsen-Berne near the “Wegelstück” road and flows into the Outer Alster as the “Langer Zug”.

        Large parts of the upper reaches of the Osterbek have been straightened today. The section between Tournamentstieg and Berberweg was renatured in 2003 as a compensatory measure for environmental damage caused by construction projects elsewhere.

        At the subway tunnel ramp in front of the Wandsbek-Gartenstadt station, the Osterbek is channeled through a culvert.

        Near the shipbuilding research institute, the Seebek, coming from Lake Bramfelder, flows into the Osterbek.

        From Wachtelstrasse the Osterbek is developed as the Osterbek Canal. The canal was built gradually from 1863 to 1912 and brought with it important industrial settlements. Examples include the rubber factory, on whose site the Museum of Work is now located, and the Kampnagel factory. The electrical plant on Flotowstrasse, the neighboring gasworks (today “Alster City”) and the waste incineration plant on Dulsberg are no longer there.

        The earth resulting from the construction of the canal was used to build the railway embankments for the light railway, the elevated railway and the freight bypass railway.

        In the upper part of the canal, a branch leads via the Barmbeker branch canal to the Stadtparksee, which in turn is connected to the Outer Alster via the Goldbek Canal. This canal was created to supply the subway's own power plant with coal. The Alster shipyard has also been located on the Osterbek Canal since 1912, where the Alster ships are still maintained and repaired today. Until 1984 there was a regular service within the HVV (line 52: “blue flag”) with piers at Mühlenkamp, Bachstrasse and Saarlandstrasse. Before the Second World War, barges ran as connecting services from the larger steamers between Mühlenkamp and the Stadtparksee. From the 1930s onwards, industrial companies began to migrate due to the lack of possibility of expanding the factory premises and structural changes; they were replaced by the expanding residential development.
