Saint John the Baptist, to whom the church "St. Johann Baptist" in Nideggen is dedicated, is - like Saint Joseph - a man on the threshold between the Old and the New Testament. This is half a year older than Jesus and is considered his forerunner. He lives in the desert, preaches the repentance of sins to the Jewish population and baptizes them in the Jordan, where Jesus also comes to be baptized, being filled with the Holy Spirit that descends on him from heaven.
The memorial day of Saint John the Baptist (Baptist) in the calendar of saints is on June 24th, exactly half a year before 'Christmas Eve'.

The Catholic parish church of St. Johannes Baptist is located in Nideggen in the Düren district in the northern Eifel. It is located directly on the access road to Nideggen Castle, at the confluence with a wooded area.
The church was built between 1177 and 1219 after several plan changes and from then on belonged to the Teutonic Order. The altar was consecrated between 1180 and 1192. At the end of 1282 it was given to the local Order of St. John by the Counts of Jülich. In the following years it served as a burial church for the noble family of the Counts of Jülich. Between 1898 and 1900 the building was renovated under the direction of the Strasbourg cathedral builder Ludwig Arntz. After severe destruction in the Second World War, St. Johannes Baptist was rebuilt in historical form by 1957, the project was led by the local architect Heinrich Lauer.

The parish church of St. Johann Baptist built in the castle grounds is unusually large. The three-aisled basilica was built from red sandstone, like all the old houses in the city. The church is richly decorated with wooden sculptures from different eras.
