On your circular hike, you'll reach a special beach in the northwest of Funen, Denmark. Dozens of cairns stand here, looking out to sea.

The stacked stones are often found in mountains or even deserts, and are intended to provide orientation. In the late afternoon sun of Funen, they are simply a wonderful sight and make this place magical.

Cairns are a form of waymarking and are now being erected worldwide.

The marking is intended to facilitate orientation, especially in impassable and confusing terrain –

such as mountains, highlands, steppe, and deserts.

Cairns are widespread in all populated areas of the world.

In Western cultures, cairns are erected at prominent locations.

They serve hikers as an expression of their connection to the place,

their identification with traditions, and as a symbolic appropriation of the environment.
