The Baroque, cross-hall church was built between 1743 and 1751 by Friedrich Joachim Stengel for the newly founded Reformed congregation of Saarbrücken; the tower was not completed until 1763. Prince Wilhelm Heinrich donated the site, the wood, the bells, and the clock. When the French Revolution spread to Saarland, the church became a "Temple of Virtue" in 1793. From 1820 to 1892, it housed the Ludwigsgymnasium, the oldest and, at the time, only grammar school in Saarbrücken. In 1892, the grammar school moved into a new building, and the Old Catholic congregation took over the Friedenskirche and restored it as a place of worship. Severely damaged by bombing in 1944, the church was rebuilt by 1966, and its interior was given a modern design. Until 2004, an icon wall stood on one narrow side of the large hall, with an altar opposite. Russian Orthodox Christians and Old Catholics alternately prayed there. At that time, the church was rarely accessible because, for insurance reasons, the icons of the Russian Orthodox community had to be kept in a locked room outside of church services. The Orthodox community has since moved to Burbach, and the Old Catholics can implement their vision of an open church. They reject central dogmas of the Roman Catholic Church: the priest is married, the Pope is by no means considered infallible by the faithful, women can become priests in the Old Catholic Church, and marriages of divorced people are possible, as are blessings for same-sex couples.

The Church of Peace is used by the Old Catholic community and is a listed building.
The transverse church was built between 1743 and 1751 by the Baroque architect Friedrich Joachim Stengel at the request of Prince Wilhelm Heinrich for the newly admitted Reformed congregation of Saarbrücken. The prince's mother, who died in 1738, had been a Reformed Christian. The funds for the construction came from the prince's endowments and collections from England and Holland. The prince donated the site, the wood, the bells, and the clock. The tower was not completed until 1763.
