15,000 years BCE
At the end of the last ice age, around 15,000 years ago, Magdalenian hunters - the last people of the Paleolithic - led a semi-nomadic or itinerant lifestyle. Game consisting of reindeer or horses is slaughtered en masse during migration periods in spring or fall. Hunting is carried out with a spear thrown using a propellant which considerably increases the power and efficiency of the shot.
Made from the excavations of Etiolles and Pincevent - section 36 -, south of Paris, the reconstructed tent was probably covered with reindeer or horse skins. The frame of the house is made up of small branches less than 2 meters long, the only ones available in the glacial environment of that time. In central and eastern Europe, the frame of tents is often made with mammoth bones.
