The building was constructed in 1895 in the historicist style. The facade of the courthouse is richly decorated with ornaments and allegories, in keeping with its origins. The inner courtyard of the building is also noteworthy. Bridge arches connect the various wings of the building on the second floor.

The building, now known as the Old Courthouse, was built in the historicist style according to a design that emerged from an architectural competition by the architects Ludwig Klingenberg and Hugo Weber, who were previously based in Oldenburg. The building was opened on September 30, 1895. It originally housed all of Bremen's courts (local court, regional court, commercial court), the public prosecutor's office and a remand prison. It remained largely undamaged despite the heavy bomb damage in Bremen's inner city during the Second World War.
