In the Alb valley, where the Moosalb flows into the Alb near Fischweier, one of the oldest boundary stones in Ettlingen stands on the forest slope in the Schöllbronn district of Ettlingen – the Totenmannstein with the year 1570. A strange name for a stone!

The story of the stone is popularly passed down as follows: One morning - it was Sunday - a man after going to church in Schöllbronn came down the hillside path to the Albtal, where he lived.

Then he suddenly heard noises above him. Looking up, he saw a young fellow in a tall tree, just about to gut the young birds from a starling nest. The churchgoer was outraged by such a crime against the animal world. He wanted to put a stop to the culprit and called out loudly: "What are you doing up there?" That is a shameful act. You should not offend nature. Animals are also part of God's creation.”

The bird robber's reply was curt and dismissive. "Get lost, old man, otherwise you won't feel well when I'm downstairs!" As they walked on, the old man called up to him: "You too will be punished!"

Laughing scornfully, the boy in the treetops reacted and packed the seven young birds in a bag while the parents flew about, screeching in fear. The bird thief quickly climbed down. Then, halfway up, a branch he was standing on broke. The bag in his left hand, he grabbed another branch with his right hand, but missed it and fell fully into the depths. He lay dead in a bush. He had broken his neck.

After many months, the body was accidentally found by mushroom pickers. Only the skeleton was left. When it became known, the old man still remembered that Sunday morning very well. As a reminder, the mighty stone was erected at this point, on which a skeleton with an hourglass in the right hand had been hewn out.

The stonemason carved the following words over it: "From time immemorial the city of Ettlingen called me a dead man."

Nice path down here into the valley, and then this interesting landmark.

The original of the Tote-Mann-Stone is in the Albgau Museum in Ettlingen. Here is a copy, but it is still very impressive.

You can read the stories about the "dead man" on the information boards - it's worth it.

The "Toter Mann" boundary stone has stood on the municipal boundary between Ettlingen-Spessart and Schöllbronn since ancient times. In the monthly journal of the Black Forest Association of Baden, No. 8, dated August 1909, 0. Heilig goes into detail about the name of the field and the boundary stone "Toter Mann" for the first time. In his essay "Der Tote-Mannstein not far from Ettlingen" he assumes that the stone got its name from the original field name and that the skeleton represents this field name pictorially. Furthermore, he knows how to report that the name of the field can still be found elsewhere. According to his explanations, the old Roman road should have led right past the stone. In contrast to later authors, he does not yet see a connection between the name and an earlier mining activity. Heilig focuses his description on the legend associated with the stone, which he had told in nearby Burbach. It is about a man who had an accident near the stone site. The saga, which was later mostly abridged or somewhat altered, reads as follows in Heilig’s version:
A man wanted to dig up a starling nest there. He climbed a tall tree and widened the hole in which the young starlings were to get them out better. A wanderer passed by and said to the man in the tree that he was sinning; Today is Trinity Sunday. The man on the tree declared: This does not mean anything; he will let the most beautiful bird fly. Now he took out the first bird. It was very beautiful. But the next one was always nicer than the one before. The man did not keep his promise, but kept all four birds for himself. Then the branch broke, and the wicked fell into the hollow oak as punishment. Years later, his skeleton was found. A stone was set in his memory.
In Ettlingen and Spessart this legend is told in a similar way. The only thing that needs to be added is that the spirit of the deceased has to wander around from time to time. And once a wanderer spoke to the spirit sitting on the tree, which answered in a strange way. In the rhyming dialogue between the spirit and the wanderer, the spirit reports that it is raising birds - "Sevens in a nest".
