"They tower into the sky like giant skeletons. The four cooling towers of the Hansa coking plant on the White Side, which can be seen from afar. For Dortmund-Huckarde, the quartet is a landmark. During tours organized by the Foundation for Industrial Monument Preservation and Historical Culture at the weekend, visitors learn what function they had.
In principle, cooling towers were used to efficiently cool several thousand cubic meters of warm water every day. The water was fed into a cycle. The aim was to use as little fresh water as necessary and to reduce the temperatures with little energy expenditure. How this was achieved is an exciting story, which is illustrated with the model of the irrigation system.
