"As a widely visible symbol for the industrial monument "Kokerei Hansa", the backlit lettering "KOKEREI HANSA" was placed on the southwest and northeast side of the "Kokelöschturm 0" at a height of approx. 42m. The arrangement is made after consultation with the monument protection authorities and a faunistic report.

The Kokerei Hansa began operations in 1928 and was at one time one of the largest coking plants in the Ruhr area. After 64 years of operation, it was shut down on December 15, 1992. Since 1995, the Kokerei Hansa has belonged to the Industrial Monument Foundation. The Kokelöschturm 0 was built as a wooden structure in 1980/81. The extinguishing tower was then renovated in 2016 - 2017. The extinguishing tower was used to extinguish coke that had just been produced with water and thereby cool it from approx. 900° to approx. 60° Celsius.

As soon as the coke is When it came into contact with oxygen, it caught fire. To prevent it from burning, it was taken from the furnace directly into the extinguishing tower. There were around 120 extinguishing operations per day. The externally visible sign of the extinguishing operation was the huge cloud of water vapor rising from the tower."
