The city wall developed from the fortification with rampart, palisade and ditch that was built around 1150. In the 13th century, the trench was widened and deepened, and the palisade was replaced by a wall. Duke Otto mentions a city wall under construction for the first time in 1297. The expansion to a closed wall ring probably dragged on, but can be assumed in the middle of the 14th century. According to a document from 1314, there were negotiations between the duke and the city at that time to demolish 30 houses on the stone gate, which disrupted the fortifications. During the Middle Ages, the wall was almost 1.8 km long. After the inclusion of Calenberger Neustadt in the middle of the 17th century, the wall was about 2.8 km long.
