The first standard clock on the (today's) Kröpcke square in downtown Hanover was designed by Konrad Oertel and put into operation in 1885. In 1945 the slightly damaged clock was put back up after repairs and in 1954 it was replaced by a modern clock. A simplified reconstruction of the original clock was erected on the Kröpcke in 1977, and it remains one of the city's most popular meeting places.

Where does the name Kröpcke come from?
The CLOCK and the SQUARE around it are named after the head waiter of the former Café Robby: Wilhelm Kröpcke. The café at the intersection was founded in 1869. In 1876 it was leased to Wilhelm Kröpcke.

The Kröpcke clock in Hanover is one of the traditional meeting places in the city. As one of the landmarks of the Lower Saxony state capital, the clock now also serves as a showcase for changing art exhibitions and presentations. The location is the "square-like extension" in the pedestrian zone in front of Café Kröpcke at the intersection of Georgstrasse with Bahnhofstrasse and Karmarschstrasse and Rathenaustrasse in the Mitte district.
