When we arrive at our final destination, we take in a bit of the history of this city in the St. Martin's Basilica in Halle. Have you heard of the cannonballs of Our Lady of Halle? According to legend, she collected it in her cloak in 1489 to protect the city of Halle from siege. The many stained glass windows tell the story of this place, how it grew into a place of pilgrimage. The basilica also houses several masterpieces from European art history. Saint Martin's Basilica is a Gothic church in the Flemish Brabant town of Halle, dedicated to Saint Martin of Tours, where numerous works of art from the period of construction are still present in situ. It is a place of pilgrimage and was elevated to a basilica by Pope Pius XII in 1946. Since then, the church has also been called Onze-Lieve-Vrouwebasilica[1]. The Royal Decree of 30 December 1933 made it a protected monument.

The basilica dominates the cityscape of Halle; its tower is among the thirty tallest in the country.
