According to a document, the “basylica zu Tigia” was taken out of the area of the original parish of Altpölla in 1132 and made an independent parish. The parish church of Allentsteig, dedicated to St. Ulrich (Bishop of Augsburg, † 973), dates back to the 11th century, as does the castle. The originally single-nave Romanesque church building was extended several times and given a Gothic look in the 14th/15th century.
In 1680, Georg Haffner, captain of the lordship (tombstone in the church), financed the extension of the church to the west and the construction of the tower after a fire. The construction of the northern aisle, the Loretto Chapel, was made possible in 1690 by Ferdinand Christoph Rappach (from Haffner's estate). When the Marienkapelle was rebuilt in 1822, the old crypt was removed, a new family crypt for the Pereira-Arnstein family was created in 1882 and a new organ was installed. In 1893 the church was redesigned in the neo-Gothic style, with a new high altar and the Ulrich window in the chancel.
In 1904 the Mary (Loretto) Chapel was enlarged and construction of the southern aisle, the Sacred Heart Chapel, began (on the site where the old charnel house had been - until 1808 the church was surrounded by the cemetery). In 1949 the church received its current bells (5 bells), in 1954 the chancel was redesigned to its current form, and between 1985 and 1990 the exterior and interior were renovated.
