            The old Elbe Tunnel is one of the fastest connections between the southern Elbe and Altona, St. Pauli, Ottensen, etc. The tunnel has been completely closed to motor vehicle traffic for several years and will likely remain a pedestrian/cyclist tunnel in the future.

            Currently (summer 2025), the western tube is being renovated, and pedestrians (mainly employees of companies south of the Elbe in the mornings, and numerous tourists in the afternoons) and cyclists (mainly commuters in both directions in the mornings and afternoons, and occasionally cyclists on leisure trips in the afternoons and on weekends) will have to share the eastern tube.

            The renovation of the western tube is scheduled to be completed in 2026, and it will then be opened exclusively as a tourist attraction, while the eastern tube will be opened to commuter traffic (both pedestrians and cyclists), who use the tunnel for purely pragmatic reasons and are not currently interested in what, admittedly, is still a technical masterpiece in the tourist sense.
