Peter Plett, a teacher from Stakendorf, discovered in 1791 that cowpox lymph is effective against smallpox (Blatter). Vaccinations were then carried out in the provost's office. Peter Plett thus prevented people from becoming disfigured and dying. This stone was erected in Stakendorf to commemorate his discovery. His achievements are also reflected in the flag of Stakendorf:
