In 1996, during collector works on the Kleine Gete, the remains of a water gate were discovered: an impressive construction in which 2 rectangular bastions, with a three-quarter round tower in front, were exposed. Part of the city wall also appeared on both sides.

This water gate was probably part of the 2nd city wall that was built in the 14th century. The first wall (12th century) was no longer sufficient to protect the increasing number of inhabitants of the city, who were forced to settle outside this wall. From 1330 onwards, major works were undertaken to incorporate these neighborhoods into the walled territory of the city.

The water gate had to protect the Kleine Gete and the southern city area against invaders and enemy attacks. For example, when there was a threat, the lower areas were flooded to prevent attacks.

The water gate is popularly called “3 locks”. This refers to a second important function of this construction. The water gate was part of a three-part dam complex that had to protect the city center from flooding.

For those interested in more remains of the second city wall: the city text about the 3 locks on zoutleeuw.be/waterpoort--3-sluizen mentions more locations and they are indeed all 3 there: in the garden of the OCMW (the old hospital) and at the town hall (the “Heksenkot”, see also the highlight "Villa Fineau"). The footpath that starts at the water gate in the direction of Koepoortstraat was also probably constructed on the foundations of this 2nd wall.

On my second visit I was able to take a bit more time to look around. And you can still see some parts of the second city wall (remains of stones) in some places.
