In 1076, Count Hermann II had a castle built to control the routes along the right bank of the Meuse to Maastricht, Tongeren, Liège, Huy and Aachen.

When the castle was built on this rocky spur overlooking the valleys of the Berwijn and the Bolland (tributary river), Dalhem became the name of the country and subsequently of the county, which until then was called 's-Gravenvelden.

Only a section of wall 14 m high and 30 m long remains of the old castle. It was built of dark sandstone and slate rubble. The wall of the large courtyard of the outbuildings, which served as accommodation for soldiers and footmen, but also as a guardhouse, stables, etc., is now partly opened by a garden gate (opposite the Wichet de la Rose, see highlight there).

The keep ends in a blank wall 3.40 meters thick. A breach has been made in the wall to give access to a house and the small gardens on the castle terrace. Two large towers next to the entrance still stand towards the courtyard of the outbuildings.

The houses from the upper market to the lower town are built on the foundations of the fortified wall of Dalhem.
