In 1828, Archduke Maximilian I had the so-called test tower built on the Freinberg – blasting tests and test bombardments were carried out here. After the completion of the final tower line at a greater distance from Linz, the test tower was no longer needed. Maximilian had two floors added and the Maximilian Chapel built next to it. In 1837 he gave the tower and chapel to the Jesuits. Today the tower is part of the Kollegium Aloisianum, a Catholic private school.

Opposite the street you can enjoy a beautiful view of the city center.

The Linz Tower Fortification (also: Maximilian Tower Line, Linz Danube Fortress, Entrenched Camp of Linz or Maximilian Fortifications) is a series of defensive towers and structures that were erected widely around the city center of Linz. Built in the first half of the 19th century, the line of defense was abandoned in the middle of the century due to advances in weapons technology when it could no longer serve its purpose adequately. Today, most of the towers are no longer preserved. Preserved towers are in particular from the eastern line of towers in Leonding and some towers on and around the Pöstlingberg fort.
