                  But the history of these buildings began very differently...

                  From 1873, the "large infantry barracks" were provided for two battalions of the traditional Hanoverian Infantry Regiment No. 77. This so-called heath barracks was one of the largest military installations in the then German Reich. The crew quarters were 5.95 m wide and 9.50 m deep; 24 soldiers were accommodated here in 3-story beds.

                  The side wings were reserved for non-commissioned officers and officers and - if they existed - also their families. The building is in the neo-Gothic style, i.e. in the style to which the then Prussian and Protestant ruling family felt obliged. The "Heideregiment", the 77s, was dissolved after the First World War in 1919, the Heidekaserne experienced changing occupations in the following period of the Weimar Republic and in the Nazi era without any significant structural changes. The post-war period saw rapidly changing British assignments, most recently the 14th Signal Regiment until 1992.

                  As early as 1979, the Cellesche Zeitung wrote that Celle's citizens "hoped that with Celle's long-term planning, these barracks would one day be demolished and a modern administration center would be built on the Wildgarten".

                  With the collapse of the Soviet Union, the military blocs and their potential threat became obsolete. The Heidekaserne was no longer needed by the British forces.

                  The history shows the difficult path of a traditional military building to peaceful use as the new town hall of the city of Celle.

                    The New Town Hall in Celle, also known as Heide-Kaserne or Taunton Barracks, is a former barracks and has been the seat of the city administration and the mayor since 1999.
                    The neo-Gothic brick building is 181 meters long and has a ridge height of 25 meters.
                    It has 5 floors and, designed as a barracks, offered space for 1,200 soldiers in 300 rooms. After a three-year renovation into an administration building, the New Town Hall is now a modern, representative town hall.
