Mining in the municipal area dates back to 1494. Originally, silver ore was mined and silver coins were extracted from it. Since the yield of the silver ores was very low (0.03% silver content) and the processing left toxic sludge behind, silver mining was stopped under pressure from the local farmers. In contrast, the processing of cobalt ores was profitable in the long term. The cleaned cobalt ores were brought to Schwarzenfels (today Motten - in the Spessart / Rhön border area), where they are used to produce dark blue cobalt paint, which was used to paint Delftware, among other things. It was not until the 19th century that Bieber mining concentrated on iron ore suitable for smelting under the direction of Prussian geologists, mining engineers and the industry of the Ruhr area. For this purpose, new tunnels were created; the largest of these was the Bertha tunnel. The ores extracted were loaded onto the railway and transported to the Ruhr area. In the 1950s, iron ore mining was discontinued for economic reasons. This ended the multifaceted and very successful time of the Bieberer mines for a long time. Good luck for !!
