    The very first chapel on this site dates back to the 11th century. After the Reformation, when the formerly Catholic church in Bieber had become the Protestant Lutheran Church, the Catholic citizens fought to at least be allowed to use the castle hill chapel for church services. However, this right was not granted to them until 1660. For almost two hundred years, the miners working in the area, most of whom were migrant workers from the Catholic Kahlgrund, received pastoral care in the Burgberg chapel, which is dedicated to Saint Mauritius - the patron saint of miners.

              The oldest part of the chapel's surviving structure is the narrow choir door, dating from the 14th century. This section is older than the rest of the choir, which dates back to the 15th century. According to an inscription in the churchyard gate (which was accidentally placed on the wrong side during renovations), the low churchyard wall dates back to 1704.
