National Heritage Tree

St. Gangolf Richteiche

This pedunculate oak (Quercus robur) was declared a national heritage tree of Germany on April 9, 2022 by the responsible board of trustees. This is intended to honor the national importance of this tree and to ensure that it will continue to live as a natural monument for centuries to come and be protected, cared for and respected for it. Please do not step under the tree here to protect the roots and as branches can fall off!

A pedunculate oak can easily live to be 1000 years old. The designation and proclamation will enable this tree to age with dignity. It is therefore one of the 100 most important trees in Germany.

Even from a distance, this sight catches the eye: a huge, obviously very old oak tree with two large holes visible from afar.
And indeed, the oak tree is almost completely hollow in the lower part. Animals have also dug additional entrances in the ground. I took a picture of the inside of the tree with my cell phone camera, shooting from bottom to top. It turned out to be a very impressive photo.
This oak tree is the St. Gangolf Richteiche (Rich Oak).
It is located in the immediate vicinity of St. Gangolf Monastery.
This pedunculate oak was declared a National Heritage Tree of Germany by the responsible board of trustees on April 9, 2022. This is intended to recognize the national significance of this tree. Furthermore, the aim is to ensure that it can survive for centuries to come as a natural monument and is therefore particularly protected, cared for, and respected.
A common oak can easily live to be 1,000 years old—this designation and proclamation allows this tree to age gracefully. It is thus one of Germany's 100 most important trees.
