Protestant Parish Church (1619) - Guntersblum 🚴‍♂️

The church was built around 1100 as a three-aisled basilica with two towers. In 1617/18, the nave was demolished due to its dilapidated condition. Reconstruction began in 1619. Due to the Thirty Years' War, the building was not completed until between 1685 and 1688. In 1702, the south tower (now housing the clock) collapsed. It was rebuilt between 1839 and 1842. The church's two towers are particularly noteworthy. The style of such octagonal vaults on a square ground plan may have originated in Persia and been further developed in 7th-century Armenia. This oriental affinity led to them being called Saracen towers. Towers of this style exist only five times in Germany (cf. Alsheim, Dittelsheim, Worms, Wetzlar). Other notable features of the church include the Gothic baptismal font. It was probably built around 1490 and is one of the so-called lion baptismal fonts. 🚴‍♂️
