Ayutthaya was the last major capital before Bangkok and the political and cultural center of Siam for 400 years. Ayutthaya was burned to the ground during a Burmese invasion in the 18th century and the population was enslaved or murdered.

Visit the old capital, which was destroyed by the Burmese in 1767. King Rama I then moved the capital to Bangkok. The ruins of the old town now form the Ayutthaya Historical Park, an archaeological site with palaces, Buddhist temples, monasteries and statues. Today it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
