This is the location of the former moated bailey that once stood here and the "official entrance" to the forest and walks. If you follow the beautiful short (audio) walk with the story about the end of the county of Loon after the destruction of the castle that stood here and the beautiful flora of the forest, this is, as it were, "the entrance" to the forest. The longer Warande Motte walk from Natuurpunt (see below) also enters the forest here. Here you will also find information boards about the forest and the castle, seats, a kind of gate and the "flag" of the county of Loon.

The Warandebos is colored as a nature reserve. Adjacent to the Warandebos, Natuurpunt has developed Aronst Hoek, a large nature reserve of 450 hectares, in the Gete and Melsterbeek valley. The Warandebos is one of the few locations in the region that has been forested for a long time. Under the forest are the rubble of an impressive moated castle that Arnold van Rummen, the last Count of Loon, had built in 1353. However, the castle was already destroyed in 1365 by the troops of the Prince Bishop of Liège.

The Warandebos has a plant richness unique to the region due to the increased lime content in the soil, because the calcareous mortar from the masonry of the castle became spread in the area. The warandebos lies on the remains of the castle of the last count of Loon. This castle was destroyed after it was taken by the prince-bishopric of Liège in the 14th century. In the forest you can still see the remains of the moats that were dug around the castle.
