The "Wood Quay" sculpture by Michael Warren stands as a symbolic tribute to Dublin's Viking past, resembling both the flow of the Liffey River and a Viking Longship. As you approach this landmark, you step into the heart of Viking Dublin, with Wood Quay encompassing the city block. Despite its historical significance, the area is now dominated by the controversial Dublin City Council offices, designed by architect Sam Stephenson and met with fierce opposition during construction. The discovery of Viking artifacts during this time underscores Dublin's rich trading history, now preserved in the National Archaeology Museum.

Finds made during excavations at the site led to a major public campaign to stop development, led by Prof. F.X. Martin, chairman of the Friends of Medieval Dublin. [4] The campaign culminated in a major protest march entitled "Save Wood Quay" on 23 September 1978, attended by 20,000 people. On 1 June 1979, 52 protesters began a three-week sit-in at the site, dubbed "Operation Sitric". [9] Members of the group included architect Michael Scott, [10] poet Eavan Boland, writer Mary Lavin and Rita Childers. [11] Over 80 cultural and social groups, including the Council of Europe, called for the site to be preserved. The Irish High Court declared the site a national monument, but the Corporation and Commissioners of Public Works undermined this decision.
