Molly Malone, also cockles and mussels, is the unofficial anthem of Dublin. This monument in honor of Molly Malone was erected in 1988 for the 1000th anniversary of Dublin.

Molly Malone is a fictitious character from a Dublin folk song. Some will tell you that in addition to being a sweet and beautiful young girl and a poor itinerant fishmonger (like her parents), Molly Malone was also a prostitute. There is actually no reference to this fact in the lyrics of the song.

This statue was erected in 1988 to celebrate Dublin's 1,000th anniversary.

Since its original location (at the beginning of Grafton Street shopping street, near the entrance to Trinity College) was relocated in 2013 to make room for a new streetcar line (Luas). New location is near St Andrew's Church.

As well as being known and sung internationally, the popular song 'Cockles and Mussels' has become a sort of unofficial anthem of Dublin City. The song's tragic heroine Molly Malone and her barrow have come to stand as one of the most familiar symbols of the capital.

Molly Malone worked as a fishmonger but also as a working girl and died in one of the outbreaks of Cholera that regularly used to sweep the city of Dublin.

The statue of Molly and her cart is affectionately nicknamed 'The Tart with the Cart' by Dubliners'.
