The tannery mill was first mentioned in documents in 1446. Over the years, many millers worked at this location on the Mühlbach in the center of Bayreuth. The mill itself was used as a grain mill, cutting mill, paper mill or as a tannery mill (tannery was a substance made from bark for tanning leather). The mill burned down several times, was rebuilt or replaced by other buildings. The hotel-restaurant "Lohmühle" was built in the old Franconian style on the foundations of the ruins of the last mill. It opened in 1980.
