After the Palatinate passed to the Kingdom of Bavaria in 1816 and compulsory education was introduced, a separate school building had to be built in 1830. The building was built in 1555 on the extensive Lingen market square in a prominent location to the northwest, where it borders the Große Straße that flows into it. With a floor area of just 104 square meters, it was built on old foundations in just under three years. It is assumed that this is a previous building from the 15th century that was destroyed in the city fire of 1548.

From the beginning, the building was designed as a plastered building and for this reason it stands out from the brick buildings that dominate northwest Germany. In place of today's outside staircase, there was originally an open court arbor supported by sandstone pillars.

When it became common practice for courts to meet in closed halls in the 17th century, the courtroom was moved to the upper floor. A guard room with two prison cells was set up on the ground floor and the scales were housed.
