    A somewhat overgrown staircase takes you to the rock on which the castle was built and to the foot of the castle wall. A little further east you come across an 'archway'.

      The lighter Bentheimer Sandstone - Gildehaus type and the brown to red Bentheimer Sandstone (the color varies with the iron content in the sandstone), occur in a sandy, spatially limited sandstone deposit of the eastern marine Lower Saxony Basin of the Lower Cretaceous, into which during the Lower Valanginian Removed material from the red sandstone was stored. The deposit reaches a maximum thickness of 60 to 70 meters and is about nine kilometers long in a west-east direction. The sandstone deposits that surface east and west of Bad Bentheim have been mined in numerous quarries for 800 years.[1] The Gildehauser sandstone occurs not far from Bad Bentheim. It was previously broken near Suddendorf.
