The first documented mention of the place comes from 1244 under the name Radegiz. In 1727 the town was granted city rights. In the same year, the citizens of the city asked Prince Leopold of Anhalt-Dessau for the right to build their own church. At that time, Radegast, like the surrounding towns, belonged to the parish in Großweissandt. However, there is evidence that a church building already existed in Radegast in the 13th century. The citizens' request is probably for permission to build a new church that previously existed. The foundation stone for the new church was laid in 1702, with significant financial involvement from the royal family. In the same year, the church was ceremoniously taken into service by the community. In 1703 the parish got its own pastor. This also determined the independence of the Radegst parish.

On January 6, 1752, the church tower collapsed. The school teacher's wife and two children were fatally injured. Reconstruction work began in the same year, but this time in massive construction. In 1803, a belfry for two bells was installed in the tower. The two bells were a donation and come from the castle chapel in Gröbzig. Already 30 years after the new church tower was built, there are reports that the tower dome is once again in disrepair.

A cannon was given to the parish in 1871 for the purpose of casting a bell. In 1872/73 the two existing bells were remelted into the "small" bell and the gun into a "large" bell. Both bells were put into use in 1873. Due to increasing maintenance costs for the church, which existed until 1874, combined with the high cost of renovation and the fact that the community had grown so large that the existing church building was no longer considered sufficient, the church was closed in 1874 Decision made to demolish the old church and build a new church.

The last service was celebrated in the old Radegast church on May 31, 1874. A few days after the service, demolition of the church building began. The new church was consecrated on December 5th, 1875. The new building was planned to be significantly larger and more lavish in height than the previous building. In 1876 the new organ was put into use by the Pfannenberg organ building company from Köthen. In 1937 this organ was exchanged for an inferior instrument of unknown origin. In preparation for the First World War, the smaller bell was taken from the church tower and remolded for military purposes. After the First World War, in 1922, the community purchased a new steel bell, which still rings today. In 1935 the porch was added to the entrance. During the Second World War the large bronze bell (Kaiserglocke) was melted down. A total renovation of the church took place in 1960-65. The entire church roof, including the tower, as well as the facades of the tower and nave were renewed. Inside the church, parts of the gallery were removed and the windows were replaced and secured. The church interior received a new painting. The pastor's position in the independent parish of Radegast existed until 1978. Since then, the parish has once again belonged to the Weissandt-Gölzau parish.

After the reunification of Germany, all 32 windows of the church, which had been vandalized during the GDR era, were replaced in 1992. In 1999-2000, damage to the church spire was repaired. Since 2005, extensive renovation and conversion work has been carried out in the church. In 2005 the entire church roof was re-covered with slate tiles. A year later, a winter church with a coffee kitchen and toilet was installed.

In 2010 the three altar windows were renewed. The artist Thomas Kuzio designed these windows and at the same time came up with the color concept for the chancel. In 2013 the transepts and their windows were redesigned. Thomas Kuzio's designs were also used here. The remaining windows in the church are currently being renovated (June 2021), also according to the artist's designs. In addition, the color of the church interior will be redesigned. Once this work is completed, the church interior will be a total work of art that invites people to praise God in many ways. It is the concern and goal of the parish to offer people in rural areas ecclesiastical, cultural, artistic and spiritual offerings and thus to give them a sense of connection to the place and their region.
