The Fuhne has no source, but rather a crest area fed by surface and seepage water from a wetland. Today's waterbed has a branch called a bifurcation. East of Zehbitz, its western part flows to the Saale, which it reaches in the Dröbel district of the city of Bernburg (Saale). The eastern part flows into the Spittelwasser, a tributary of the Mulde, in Jeßnitz. The part that drains into the hollow did not arise naturally, but goes back to drainage measures in the swampy lowland towards the end of the 16th century, when newly created ditches such as the Landgraben were connected to the water in such a way that the central section of the new ditch slopes into both had directions.[3] The swampy lowland between the Mulde and the Saale, where the Fuhne lies, is cultivated as grassland and is part of a Ice Age channel that used to drain exclusively to the west and carried water from the Mulde area towards the Elbe.[4] This lowland was reactivated by drainage.

The Mulde and Saale are direct tributaries of the Elbe. Until the 1990s, the eastern part of the Fuhne was considered polluted due to discharges of industrial wastewater.

The Fuhne is 55 km long, of which the western part is around 42.9 km and the eastern part is 12.15 km. With a few exceptions, the southernmost part of the river covers the border between what was then the Duchy of Anhalt and the former Prussian province of Saxony. The river also separates the dialect area of the Anhalt dialect from the surrounding areas, sometimes sharply and clearly perceptible.

The western course of the Fuhne flows mainly through rural areas and describes almost a semicircle overall, first to the southwest to north of Zörbig, then a long stretch to the west to near Löbejün, then to the northwest to near Könnern, finally to the north to the mouth at Bernburg.

Lateral tributaries contribute significantly to their water flow.

Just 2 km after the summit, a 3 km long nameless stream flows from Löberitz (district of the town of Zörbig), which is often thought to be the upper reaches of the Fuhne.

Also from the left, the 34.3 km long Strengbach flows 6.7 km after the crest, which today rises near Glesien on the edge of Leipzig/Halle Airport and, together with the subsequent Fuhnelauf, forms the longest flow path in their system, 72.5 km.

The next notable tributary is the almost 7 km long Nesselbach from Prosigk from the north, which flows into Cösitz.

The 23 km long vineyard rises in the south near Oppin near Halle (Saale) and flows into Glauzig.

The Ziethe flows into the north-facing lower reaches near Plömnitz. It arises from branches from the Libbesdorfer Landgraben and is itself 25.5 km long, from its sources in Quellendorf 28.4 km long.

The eastern Fuhne has an S-shaped course and passes the industrial area near Bitterfeld: northeast to Salzfurtkapelle, east-southeast to the Dessau-Leipzig railway line and then a short distance northeast to the mouth of the Spittelwasser. It does not have any large tributaries. Shortly before this mouth it is crossed by the shaft ditch.
