The monument next to the Divi Blasii Church, created by the sculptor Klaus Friedrich Messerschmidt, shows the young Johann Sebastian Bach standing next to his monument base. About Johann Sebastian Bach: Johann Sebastian Bach is one of the most important composers in Germany. He was born on March 21, 1685 in Eisenach, where he spent his first ten years. From 1703 to 1708, Bach was organist at the New Church, now the Bach Church, in Arnstadt. He was originally invited to look after the organ in what was then the Church of St. Boniface, where he soon became church organist. During this time Bach created many works for the organ, including the famous "Toccata and Fugue in D minor". At the beginning of 1707 he moved to the high-ranking and better-paid position of organist in the Divi Blasii Church in Mühlhausen. Thanks to the significantly higher pay, he was soon able to start a family and married his cousin Maria Barbara Bach on October 17, 1707, with whom he had seven children. In Mühlhausen he had many tasks, including the disposition of the church organ. He wrote the cantata “God is my King,” which is the only one that has survived in print from this period. In 1708 Bach traveled to Weimar, where he played for Duke Wilhelm Ernst and received an offer as court organist in the palace chapel, the so-called Himmelsburg. During this period of almost ten years in Weimar he composed a large part of his organ works as well as cantatas, works for harpsichord and early versions of the Brandenburg Concertos. In 1714 he was promoted to concertmaster - his reputation as an organ virtuoso quickly spread beyond Germany. In 1717, Bach was appointed court music director in Anhalt-Köthen by Prince Leopold. His wife Maria Barbara died there in 1720 and just one year later Bach married for the second time: the musician's daughter Anna Magdalene Wilcke. In April 1723 he began the prestigious position of Thomaskantor in Leipzig. At this last station in his life, Bach created his great vocal works (John and St. Matthew Passions), as well as numerous cantatas and motets. On July 28, 1750, Johann Sebastian Bach died in Leipzig at the age of 65.
