The Feldherrnhalle is located at the southern end of Odeonsplatz, between Theatinerstrasse and Residenzstraße. It was built between 1841 and 1844 by Friedrich von Gärtner on behalf of King Ludwig I. Ludwig had the Feldherrnhalle built as a memorial in honor of the Bavarian army. Two mighty stone lions watch over the bronze statues of the generals Graf Tilly and Prince Wrede as well as the Bavarian Army Memorial.

As part of the fortification of Munich, plans were drawn up as early as 1790 for a central square that would replace the Schwabinger Tor and make the driveway from the Residenz on Fürstenweg to Nymphenburg Palace (now Brienner Straße) more attractive. In 1816, then still crown prince, he commissioned Leo von Klenze with the overall planning of Ludwigstrasse, which also includes Odeonsplatz.
