    After a devastating city fire in 1403, it was rebuilt in the Gothic and late Gothic style. The town hall was given its neo-Gothic facade in 1866/67. The large coat of arms of the city of Zwickau can be seen above the main entrance. After a two-year renovation and conversion phase, the entire building has been shining in new splendor since 2011.

                      During the Reformation, the city was governed by a council that was open to the ideas of the Reformation from an early stage. Müntzer found his greatest advocate in Erasmus Stüler (known as Stella), mayor and councilor. Mayor Hermann Mühlpfort was close friends with Luther, who preached to over 10,000 listeners from one of the town hall windows on May 1, 1522.

                      In the 19th century, Robert Schumann was probably a regular guest at the town hall. The wife of the then mayor Ruppius was Robert Schumann's godmother and raised little Robert for two and a half years from 1813.
