The Avenstroth mill, also called Sundernmühle, is one of the oldest watermills on the Dalke in Gütersloh's urban area. The exact time of origin cannot be determined, but it may go back to the 6th or 8th century.
It is the only fully operational watermill on the Dalke in Gütersloh. As a leaseholder, master miller Siegfried Friese operates the grinding mill and runs a feed store.

Today's Sundernmühle opposite the Parkbad is one of the oldest watermills on the Dalke in Gütersloh. Their exact date of origin cannot be determined, but it may go back to the 6th or 8th century. During this time, several farms emerged in the heath and wasteland areas of what is now East Westphalia, including the Meierhof Avenstroth. The Hofmühle on the right bank of the Dalke initially belonged to the diocese of Osnabrück before Count Konrad zu Tecklenburg and Herr zu Rheda bought it in 1532.

The mill remained in the possession of the Lords of Rheda until the dissolution of the landlordship as a result of the Congress of Vienna in 1815. In 1818 it was sold to the brothers Johann Heinrich and Friedrich Wilhelm Niemöller. Their successors - the brothers August and Wilhelm Niemöller - expanded it into a large mill in 1856/57. They modernized the water mill by erecting a new mill building on the left bank of the Dalke in place of the old Boke mill and former oil mill. As part of this modernization, they supplemented the traditional water drive with a steam engine and used a Köchling turbine instead of a water wheel, which resulted in a significant increase in the daily grinding output.

A major fire destroyed the mill in 1902. Then only the grain mill on the left was rebuilt, which was to be powered solely by water power in the future. This reduced the daily grinding output to 2 tons. The company Gebrüder A. & W. Niemöller, Mühlenwerke, had already relocated its main location from Gütersloh to Dortmund in 1896. Nevertheless, various modernizations were carried out in Avenstroth's mill between 1921 and 1935, which brought the mill up to date with the latest technical standards.
