It is a granite memorial located in St. Nicholas Place at the Pier Head in Liverpool, England. The city of Liverpool is strongly associated with the ill-fated ship that sank on April 15, 1912, after hitting an iceberg in the North Atlantic, killing about 1,517 people. The RMS Titanic was owned by the White Star Line, founded in Liverpool in 1840. Liverpool was also the liner's port of registry, with the words "Titanic, Liverpool" inscribed on the ship's stern.

The memorial, located on Liverpool's waterfront, is dedicated to the 244 engineers who lost their lives in the disaster while staying on the ship and providing the stricken liner with power and other amenities for as long as possible. The memorial is the first memorial in the United Kingdom to depict the worker.

This memorial near Liverpool's Pier Head is dedicated to the heroes of the ship's engine room. It is often referred to as the 'Titanic Memorial' as it was originally intended to commemorate the victims of that disaster. The RMS Titanic was registered in Liverpool and the White Star Line's headquarters were not far from the Pier Head. In fact, the building still stands there today. Although the Titanic did not visit Liverpool, there were many local connections to the ship and to this day there are a number of Titanic memorials in the city.

However, the original idea of the memorial was to commemorate the 244 engine room workers
who stayed at their posts after the ship struck the iceberg on 15 April 1912 and
kept the ship's systems running for as long as possible to help rescue people as the ship sank.
