St. John Nepomuk statue on the market square
Saint John Nepomuk protected the bridge over the Weierbach, which is now built. The St. Pölten sculptor Peter Widerin (1684 – 1760) created the statue in 1736 on behalf of the abbot Berthold Dietmayr. The base reliefs recount the saint's martyrdom: pilgrimage, confession of the queen, torture, fall of the bridge, discovery of the body, admission to heaven.

He climbed onto the statue's base and placed an old, battered hat on Saint Nepomuk's head. The next morning, when the residents of Melk entered the main square, they were surprised and amused to see the saint wearing such an unusual accessory. The story quickly spread, and people came from all over the town to see the unusual spectacle.

The Abbot of Melk Abbey, hearing about the incident, couldn't help but laugh and decided to leave the hat there for the rest of the day before finally having it removed. Since then, the story has been told as a humorous anecdote in Melk, reminding residents that even the holiest of statues can sometimes use a little humor.
