The old bridge was built from granite between 1892 and 1894 and had a five-arched iron structure as the superstructure and a representative bridge portal. In the last days of the war, this bridge was blown up. Gauleiter Eigruber did not want the Americans to drive over the bridge over which Adolf Hitler had entered Austria in 1938. He was also one of those Nazi leaders who resisted to the last. On May 1st, the old bridge was blown up - but that achieved absolutely nothing. Braunau was occupied by the Americans on May 2nd.
