The building in which the museum is housed today was built from sandstone in 1239. It was initially intended as a town castle for defensive purposes, but was later used as a residential building and storehouse. The entrance area consists of around 3-meter-high masonry rooms with sandstone walls and a beamed ceiling. The museum was opened by the local pharmacist family in 1989 with exhibits from the 18th century after the city council decided to preserve the building in 1978. Since 2012, the museum has belonged to the city of Hofgeismar.
