Glockenspiel by Johann Joachim Kändler from 1739, today Dresden State Art Collections, porcelain collection. This is a cabinet or table glockenspiel with 52 bells.

    The Zwinger of Dresden
The Dresden Zwinger also includes the carillon pavilion, which was previously primarily referred to as the Sophienpavillon or city pavilion. The carillon made of Meissen porcelain has been located eight meters high on the Zwingerhof side since 1933. The original 24 porcelain bells were expanded to 40 bells. A set of 40 porcelain bells with gold decoration and a white edge were installed. Most of the bells, along with the game mechanics, were destroyed in the Second World War; only a few of the golden bells remained. Photos prove this. The game did not sound again until January 1964 and only white bells were used. In 1994 the bells were retuned and new electronics were installed. The chimes sound every quarter of an hour, but a little longer on the hour. At 10:15 a.m., 2:15 p.m. and 6:15 p.m. a symphony of bells sounds for about 5 minutes. The hourly chime melody was composed in 1994 by Günter Schwarze from the “Carl Maria von Weber” University of Music. The sensitive bells do not ring in the winter months.

Glockenspiel Pavilion in the Dresden Zwinger
Anyone visiting Dresden will certainly have a trip to the Dresden Zwinger on their agenda. The Dresden Zwinger is a building complex with gardens, which was built under the direction of the architect Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann and the sculptor Balthasar Permoser. The Zwinger was built around 1709 as an orangery and garden as well as a representative festival area for Elector Friedrich August I, also known as "August the Strong".

The Zwinger also includes the Glockenspiel Pavilion (formerly the City Pavilion), which was built in 1728, with minor work continuing until 1732. After construction, it was destroyed several times. The first destruction occurred in 1849, when the flames from the fire in the immediately adjacent opera house spread to the eastern part of the Zwinger, destroying a scientific library located there. The pavilion was destroyed again in an air raid in 1945, and its reconstruction lasted until 1955.
The carillon, which is made of Meissen porcelain and can be seen on the facade of the Zwinger courtyard at a height of 8 meters, has been there since 1933. It survived the Second World War unscathed. When the pavilion was subsequently rebuilt, the carillon was expanded from the original 24 to 40 bells made of Meissen porcelain.

      When does the carillon ring?
The bells ring every quarter of an hour, a little longer on the hour, and at 10:15 a.m., 2:15 p.m. and 6:15 p.m. a bell symphony sounds for about 5 minutes.
