Neideck Castle is a former moated castle in Arnstadt, Thuringia (Ilm district). Today, except for the castle tower, it is only preserved as a ruin.
History:
The castle was built between 1553 and 1560 by Count Günther XLI. built by Schwarzburg. It was built in Renaissance style on the foundations of the Hersfeld Castle, which was mentioned as early as 1273.
Schloss Neideck became the seat of the Counts of Schwarzburg-Arnstadt, making Arnstadt the royal residence. When Prince Anton Günther II died in 1716, the residence was subsequently relocated to Sondershausen. The castle was now almost empty and was also used as a stable. Stones were removed to build bridges. The decline set in, finally, the castle collapsed in 1779 in part. In April 1945, the tower was damaged by American artillery fire. The castle Neideck serves today as an outside backdrop of the boarding school building in the television series Schloss Einstein. Wikipedia
