This dilapidated mill, also sometimes simply called "Stone Mill", was built in 1762, replacing the Leeuwergem mill that was burned down in 1677 during the French invasion. A brick kiln was established in Leeuwergem for the construction of the new mill.

From 1823 (or earlier?) to 1877, the mill was owned by the famous Ghent noble family d'Hane de Steenhuyze (whose home, a true city palace, in Ghent's Veldstraat can still be visited).

The mill was active until 1923. In 1978 the mill was recognized as a monument together with the surrounding area as a village sight.

The mill is now in very poor condition. For the time being, the outside of the hood is covered with metal and broken parts have been protected under a shelter for the time being.

In 2013, after sale, it came into the hands of Baron della Faille d'Huyse (of the castle of Leeuwergem) ... descendant of the owner 150 years ago.

He plans to have the mill restored, supported by the Zottegem Culture Working Group. The guidelines of the Immovable Heritage Agency state that a wooden wicker cross should be chosen for the restoration; After all, the mill never had a metal blade cross.
