The first written mention of the Livinus Chapel goes back to the year 1500. It was then
described as 'the church of sente Lievens houtem up sente Lievens coutre'. In its current form
the chapel dates from 1640. In 1702 the chapel was further expanded. It was protected as a monument in 1994.
Next to the chapel is the Livinusbron, already mentioned in 1472 as the 'sente Lievens borne'. Legend has it that the holy martyr Livinus placed his staff in the ground at this place. A spring sprang up that never ran dry again. The water from the well is said to have healing powers.
Every year on Easter Sunday a pilgrimage takes place to and around the chapel.

Livinus van Ghent, born in Ireland around 580, came to Zeeland and Flanders to preach the Word of God. After a stay in the Ganda Abbey (Sint Bavo's Abbey) he moved to Aalst and the region between Ghent and Ninove.

While he was preaching at an advanced age, Livinus is said to have been attacked in Esse (Sint-Lievens-Esse) in the year 657 by a group of pagans, who tore out his tongue and cut off his head. Livinus is said to have subsequently been buried in Houtem.

Livinus is said to have been canonized in 842 by means of an elevatio (raising of the bones). His bones are said to have been transferred from Houtem to Ghent in 1007, where they were lost in 1578 during the Second Beeldenstorm.
