The Chapel of St. John the Baptist in Eupen, commonly known as the Bergkapelle, is a Roman Catholic church building in Eupen's lower town. It was built in 1712 to replace an older, dilapidated chapel from the 15th century in the Romanesque style on the same site and was dedicated to the preacher John the Baptist and St. Francis of Assisi.
History: In the early modern period, when the country of Belgium was still under Habsburg administration, Eupen-Unterstadt consisted of sparsely populated small hamlets, whose residents built small chapels for their religious needs, as the responsible main parish of St. Nicholas was beyond a ridge in the center of the Eupener Oberstadt was located and was difficult to reach. As early as the 15th century, there was a small chapel for the so-called Bergviertel above the Weser Valley. In 1692, another chapel was supposed to be built for the Haasviertel in the valley, but for inexplicable reasons the construction was never completed. The church administration then decided in 1712 to tear down the old chapel on the mountain and replace it with a new, larger one for the residents of the Berg and Haasviertel. Since all residents committed themselves to actively participate in the construction and further maintenance, the new building was now completed in a very short time using the building materials from the unfinished Haas Chapel and was consecrated on December 20, 1712 by the Liège Auxiliary Bishop Ludwig Franz de Liboy of the responsible diocese of Liège become. Just a few years later it became clear that the chapel had been designed to be too small for the growing population and that it had to be expanded by one bay to the west in 1729. The new consecration took place on October 14, 1729 by the Liège auxiliary bishop Jean-Baptist Gillis (1729–1736), who had also consecrated the Werth Chapel on the same day and the renovated St. Nicholas Church the day before.
