The church is already mentioned in the 12th century, although it was rebuilt at the end of the 14th century at the request of the Lord of Orgaz, who added the current Christian bell tower to the old Muslim minaret. The tower is one of the best exponents of Toledo Mudejar, with glazed ceramics and inlaid with a Visigothic niche and a kicked cross.

The Church of Santo Tomé is located in the Santo Tomé neighborhood, one of the best neighborhoods in the Jewish quarter. It encompassed Santo Tomé Street, Plaza del Conde, and the first part of Alamillos and San Juan de Dios streets. This church houses El Greco's legendary painting, Burial of the Lord of Orgaz. If it weren't for its contents, it would be just another church in the city, one of the many in the old town. But it is one of the most visited because it houses this El Greco work.
