    On the Schomme, wet nature instead of concrete.
    Restoring a landscape after years of being occupied by pigsties. That is what is about to happen in Dassenaarde.
    'On the Schomme'. refers to the bare, poor soil that is typical of the region on the flanks of a wet valley and which is home to many unique species.

          The Op De Schomme reception center in Diest has officially opened. The children of the Dassenaarde playground were given the honor of being the very first to play in the area. The Flemish Land Agency has been restoring the area in recent years. Originally, an old pig farm stood there. That building was demolished, making way for a mosaic of wetlands, woodland, and play areas.

          For children, there's a play area with a climbing course and jungle swing, among other things. Wooden sculptures of black woodpeckers and whiskered bats alert visitors to the interesting wildlife that also inhabits the area. The grasslands, woodlands, and fens now provide a habitat for several heathland species, as well as insects like the field cricket and the common hare-beard. Even birds like the tree pipit and the honey buzzard find a home there.

          The entire project cost €995,000.

            At this point, you could see the progress of the work. It's now overgrown and quite a distance from both the fen and the sights of De Schomme. It's best to go to the reception point with parking (which has three information boards and is close to the fen; Komoot doesn't yet have the trails on its map).                 Since August 2025, the new nature reserve has been open to hikers and serves as a reception area for Dassenaarde - Asdonk. There is a small parking lot, picnic benches, play areas, a viewing platform, and a platform by the pond.
