    An almost pyramidal peak, Pen r Ole Wen looms over the elbow of Ogwen, watching from above as screaming jets pull hard right to skim along the valley floor. It’s a gateway to the Carneddau, a viewpoint for the Glyderau, a hill of pinnacled ridges and secluded cwms, and a beauty of a mountain.

      There are two options to tackle Pen yr Ole Wen from the A5. The direct route from the Youth Hostel is the most challenging; a steep, technical and scree-filled ascent to the 3,209 feet (978 m) high summit.

      The slightly easier trail starts from the eastern end of Llyn Ogwen and ascends via Ffynnon Lloer. Unfortunately, there is no easy option. Once you make it to the summit, though, prepare to be impressed with magnificent views over to Tryfan and the Glyderau.

        Pen Yr Ole Wen is best tackled without getting a heart attack by coming up its eastern flank along a distinct path just east of Llyn Ogwen. This renowned peak is your stepping stone onto the Carneddau ridge and a scenic wonderland of superb vistas awaits you.

          Great views from the summit, and best accessed from the east side, although there is scrambling whether you take this route or the direct route from the South.

          Not an easy ascent whichever route you take, and there is some exposure. The quickest way to access the Carneddau from Llyn Ogwen.

                  Pen yr Ole Wen stands proudly as one of the iconic Welsh 3000s.

                  I started my climb from the eastern side of the mountain. This route is a steady but demanding climb with the path being clear and walkable, though the incline gradually intensifies.

                  Partway up the ascent, it is to be noted there is a short section of scrambling. While it adds a touch of adrenaline to the route, it remains accessible for most and requires only basic hands-on effort. This brief scramble injects a bit of excitement without being overwhelming

                  Once at the top you are rewarded with panoramic views in all directions, my favourite being South, toward the rugged silhouettes of Tryfan, Glyderau range and beyond.

                    Pen yr Ole Wen rises steeply above Llyn Ogwen, and the direct climb from near Ogwen Falls is uncompromising, but the views are superb.
