A legendary mountain tour across Germany's second-highest peak: long, challenging, and exposed, with fantastic views. Stable weather, surefootedness, a head for heights, and alpine experience are essential! The traverse is not for the inexperienced, as it is extremely demanding both technically and physically. Along the route, there are several climbing sections secured with wire ropes, but also some unsecured passages. Extreme caution is required, especially on the extremely long (2000m) descent from the southern peak to the Wimbachgries, as steepness and loose scree, combined with fatigue, have caused many accidents.

Typically, the tour is combined with an overnight stay at the Watzmannhaus; fitter alpinists can also complete the tour in a single day. Including the Wimbach Bridge, the starting and finishing points, this would add up to 24km and 2400m of elevation gain. The tour is very popular, so expect congestion at the climbing and narrow sections of the route during the holiday season. An early start is recommended.
